The new GOP immigration bill drama explained: Lies, flip flopping, and more lies…
The “Compromise Bill”
Yesterday (June 14, 2018) House Republicans released the draft version of their immigration bill. This is being dubbed the “compromise bill” as it has been written by moderate and strict conservatives. After stalling on DACA updates, moderate republicans were wor king with democrats and gain enough votes to force action. However, Paul Ryan stepped in, called all House republicans to meet, and they drafted this “compromise” bill. Another bill will also be voted on next week that is strictly conservative.
The White House has been working to lobby the “compromise bill” to stricter conservatives and Trump’s senior advisor and
racist POS“immigration hardliner” Stephen Miller has been working to sell this bill to conservative republicans. Miller claims that the bill is “the best thing we’ve seen since 1965,” and that to reject this bill “would be to accept the status quo, which is inappropriate for us.“
The bill was specifically designed to meet Trump’s demands. In January, Trump mandated that he will only sign and immigration bill that gives him money and increased security for his border wall, elimination of the "diversity visa lottery,” curbing family-based immigration, and creating a way for those under the DACA program to apply for formal legal status in the US. The “compromise bill” does all of this, it also includes measures regarding the administration’s recent demands when it comes to asylum seekers. In an effort to reduce the number of asylum seekers, the bill will make initial screenings harder and allow the US to turn back asylum seekers who come through Mexico.
What the Fuck Does Trump Want?
Despite this meeting all of Trump’s requirements, today Trump said that he “certainly wouldn’t sign the more moderate one.“ aka the compromise bill. This comes after Trump said he would support this bill and dispatched members of his administration to help write and promote this bill. Without Trump’s guarantee of support it’s unlikely that strict conservatives will back this bill.
So what is changing Trump’s mind (again)? Well, the biggest divergence between Trump’s administration policy goals and what’s in the bill comes down to family separations at the border (more on this below). It also signals that the administration is seeking even stricter immigration policies as laid out in the hardline GOP immigration bill written by Rep. Bob Goodlatte.
The Hardline Bill
Activists, faith leaders, and some lawmakers have been outspoken against Bob Goodlatte’s bill. This bill would end the "diversity visa lottery,” which would cut 50,000 visas annually. It cuts family based immigration by eliminating the ability of citizens to sponsor their parents, adult children, brothers and sister, increases border security, it won’t offer pathways to citizenship for Dreamers and will only offer temporary protections, diminish humanitarian protections for asylum seekers and children, and it will not do anything to stop family separations at the border.
The stricter GOP immigration bill has been getting less attention because the administration had been actively working and supporting the other bill. With Trump’s new comments, it becomes more likely that this bill will gain the support of more House Republicans.
Family Separation Debate Co ntinues
Paul Ryan has spoken out against family separations at the border and pushed the compromise bill forward on the claim that it would end this. Trump also spoke out against these actions and blamed democrats for the zero tolerance policy despite it being his administration being the one who implemented the “zero tolerance policy” that increased the practice.
“The Democrats are forcing the breakup of families at the Border with their horrible and cruel legislative agenda,” he wrote. “Any Immigration Bill MUST HAVE full funding for the Wall, end Catch & Release, Visa Lottery and Chain, and go to Merit Based Immigration. Go for it! WIN!” (x)
“He’s following laws, very simply, that were given to us and forced upon us by the Democrats. The Democrats gave us the laws. Now, I want the laws to be beautiful, humane, but strong. I don’t want bad people coming in.”
Paul Ryan is also filled with bullshit when it comes to this issue as well (I know, shocking). Ryan is focusing on the issue of family separations and claiming this bill will prevent the administration from continuing it. However, the bill does bill does not explicitly outlaw the family separations:
What the House bill does is get rid of the extra legal protections that children and families have in immigratio n detention: a requirement that children be kept in the “least restrictive” conditions possible, and that they not be detained any longer than necessary. This means that if the family is kept together, their parents must be released with them. The Trump administration calls those protections “loopholes,” and blames them for “forcing” the administration to keep asylum-seekers in custody by separating families.
If the House bill passed, the Trump administration probably would stop separating families. Instead, it would be able to keep children and parents in ICE detention until their cases were resolved — that is, they could be in held in detention indefinitely. (x)
Shitty on both sides. Call your representatives, get out and protest, raise awareness, demand a clean DREAM Act, demand the end to family separations, end detention centers, etc. etc…

Today In Solidarity (6/12/18): As we remember the two year anniversary of the Pulse massacre, it is important that we reflect on narrative and who gets to write history. In the weeks following the tragedy, police were lauded as heroes for their response. In reality, they dragged their feet in responding to the shooting, sprayed bullets indiscriminately into the club, and have used the opportunity to muscle their way deeper into queer spaces, potentially threatening the safety of them. Survivors have recently filed a lawsuit around parts of this reality.
Alternately, we must remember that the victims of this massacre were predominantly Latinx, some even with hazy immigration statuses. The reality is that to this day member of the Latinx LGBTQ community (in Orla ndo and across the country) experience xenophobia, racism, and classism at the hands of police/authorities. We must not allow the Pulse tragedy to be white-washed. We must demand accountability for the lives lost not just at the hands of terrorists, but due to the cavalier and reckless way police acted in response. #nojusticenopeace #noprideforpolice
Trump is an abusive landlord who wants to be paid off, or he’ll kick you out or stiff you.
Trump is incapable of mutual benefit or mutual respect. It’s all zer o sum. There has to be a winner, and there has to be a loser.
This is such a good thread, I’ve never thought about it this way before.
Seems legit… No, f’REALz. This analysis fits well with his inexplicable foreign trade policies and is as likely, if not MORE likely, to shake out true as anything else with that randomly chaotic Chimp.
There’s something really poetic about Rachel Dolezal’s white ass getting busted for welfare fraud when so many raci st Republicans still perpetuate this false image of the welfare negress who lives to scam the government.
I just googled this. How selfish can this woman possibly be? She has young children whom she’s already humiliated and now she’s facing 15 years in prison. She made $84,000 from her book deal. Did she really need the government assistance? This lady is such a fraud and a parasite. She’s always taking from others.
I think she sold like less than 100 books or something like that but I’m sure she got paid something way too much for that. And that damn documentary. I hope she dies.
Well you know since she considers herself African American hopefully she gets punished as such swiftly and harshly just like the people whose identity she appropriated hope she gets a good 5 to 15-year stretch to reflect on the choices that have led her to this point
Wait-wait-WAIT!!… The FUCK hap pened, NOW wit this wench?… She on the Welfare Fraud Train?… So, like, she wanna COMMIT Welfare Fraud and get AWAY WITH IT like so MANY people of a Caucasian Persuasion, but then she found out why BLACK FOLKS ain’t inclined to DO THAT SHIT. ‘Cause, yah know, poor black people with LEGITIMATE WELFARE CLAIMS get scrutinized up, down, sideways, backwards, and THEN with an electron microscope, trying quilify. And OFTEN get charged with fraud, just because white people from polititions tryinna scam votes with some kinna image, to racist Welfare Counselors who just don’t give a fuck, EXPECT THEM to be fraudulent. Not, yah, know, because there’s any PROOF of it or anything, yah understand. But because THEY are BLACK. Learned something Brand New about what being black REALLY means, huh Rachel?… Guess all that ‘identifying as black’, mess ain’t wo rking out, quite, like you planned it. Real shame, there…
